An appeal message from Health Coordinator - Ven Jampa Tsondue (Chanting Master):
We are dedicated to the survival and continuance of the teachings of the Lord Buddha. Thus, we see that Health is very important to survive our life and without good health nothing can be made possible. Hence, we, the Sangha community of Dzongkar Choede Monastery voluntarily formed a working committee members to provide health facilities and nutritious food for the Sanghas to keep them remain healthy. As the monastery is short of funds to make these feasible. Hence, we deeply appeal to our dharma friends to extend your valued financial supports to provide proper health and food facilities for our sanghas community to keep them fit in dharma practices and studies. Thanks.
DONATION PROGRAMS
Dzongkar Choede Monastery requests your assistance in generating funds for two programs that are essential for the preservation of the mission of the monastery. These programs are the Food Foundation and the Health Fund. Please read about these opportunities to contribute. For details about how to donate, please read to the end of the page.FOOD FOUNDATION
The goal of the Dzongkar Choede Monastery's Food Foundation is to ensure the proper nourishment of the monks at Dzongkar Choede Monastery. Presently, there are 200 monks living in the monastery. Each years approximately 30 new young children (monks) arrive from various Tibetan settlements in India. Many of these monks (childrens) are from the destitute families come to study Buddhist philosophy and dialectics since this education is not available to them in their home.
Since Dzongkar Choede Monastery is dedicated to the survival and continuance of the teachings of the Buddha, no person is refused entrance into the Monastery. However, many of these monks have no financial resources to support themselves. As a result, Dzongchoe Monastery is faced with the ever increasing problem of providing enough food for the monastery to ensure that everyone living there remains healthy. In particular, the administration is concerned about the diet and welfare of the very young monks who need a well balanced and nutritious diet so that they can grow into happy and healthy adults.
Typically, the fare at the monastery is very simple. There are three meals a day-- morning is the time for tea and a piece of bread. At noon the monks are provided with Thugpa-noodle soup with vegetables. In the evening they receive noodles and tea again. This tea is plain tea except for puja days when the monks are given traditional Tibetan Butter tea. Once in a great while during special festivals, the monks are given an egg to eat.
The Food Foundation plans to guarantee that the monks will have enough money in reserve so that even in times of financial drought, there will always be food available. Specifically, the monastery needs $ 20,000 USD per year to feed 200 monks, allotting each monk 13 Indian rupees approx. for three meals per day. The plan is to raise enough money so that the food allowance will be paid by the interest generated by dollars deposited in the FOOD FOUNDATION FUND. This ensures that no matter what economic situation arises, there will always be food for the monks to eat.
HEALTH FUND
Until recently, the Monastery has been providing 75% medical allowance to the monks who undergo medical treatment provided that they submit an original copy of their medical bills and expenses. This allowance is made available to an individual monk after every three months. This program has been very beneficial to the monks who are financially backward and who live solely on prayer offerings. Most of these destitute (children) monks are from Tibetan settlements scattered in India. They come to the monastery to avail the education opportunities and here we impart educations for them to become a good citizen and good monk and healthy life.
However, for the last few months, there has been a decrease in the percentage provided because of insufficient funds for this program and because of the many monks who have been coming forward to claim this medical allowances. This means that in the future, many many sick monks won't be able to go to the hospital as they won't be able to afford to do so.
Therefore, Dzongkar Choede Monastery, itself has a special program in which local Phende Hospital doctors come to Dzongkar Choede and make house visit and examine the monks at our small Dispensary built in the mid of the year 2004. They keep records when they visit and check the monks blood pressure, and do blood tests and may be sometimes other tests that checks for diabetes and heart problems, etc. Although the consultation fees are free, but the monks are required to pay for the medicines.
COMMUNITY DISPENSARY
Dzongkar Choede Monastery provides its resident monks and people from the nearby villages with medical assistance through its Community Dispensary. All of the staff are monk volunteers who help everyone who comes to its doors. Dr. Tenzin Gyalpo is the chief medical officer of the clinic, which is also open to the public too from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the alternative day.
Medical consultation fees are free and the charges for medicines are minimal. The continuance of this medical care is dependent entirely upon the generosity of donors. Any assistance would be gladly welcomed.
In addition, patients with serious problems may avail themselves of services from the Men-Tse- Khang(Tibetan Hospital) in the Tibetan settlement as well as the hospital located in nearby city Mysore(to and fro 120 kilometers distance) or Bangalore(approx. 340 kilometers distance to and fro).
